David Brown: Ngurra – My Country, My Home

February 8 - March 8

David Brown

David Brown, Tjalkul Mintaku, natural ochre and pigment on canvas, 60 x 60 cm, 2022

Emerging Aboriginal landscape artist David Brown invites art lovers and cultural enthusiasts to experience his powerful new collection, showcasing a vivid representation of the country he calls home — the Kimberley region and further south towards the Gibson Desert.

Using traditional ochre pigments on canvas, Brown blends rich colours with evocative text to create artwork that speaks to the heart of his identity, connection to the land, and the ongoing importance of cultural preservation. Through the textured ochre layers, which in part speak of ancient traditions, and the bold, modern text incorporated into some of the works, the artist captures a dynamic dialogue between history and modernity.

The use of ochre, a material rich with cultural significance, draws from the artist’s connection to the land and the natural pigments found in his environment. The colours evoke the red soil of the Kimberley, the golden tones of the setting sun, and the striking contrasts of nature that make this region so unique. Interwoven with text that carries messages of heritage, resilience, and the vital importance of connection to Country, Brown’s works are both personal and universal, resonating with all who view them.
