Doreen Chapman: New works

September 21 - October 5

Doreen Chapman, ‘Biliby’, 2024, acrylic on canvas, 122 x 122 cm

James Makin Gallery in collaboration with Spinifex Hill Studio are excited to present a selection of Doreen Chapman’s paintings. Chapman is rapidly gaining recognition for her dynamic style and unique perspective. She was the only artist invited to exhibit across each venue of the 2024 Biennale of Sydney, followed by a sell out presentation with James Makin Gallery at the 2024 Sydney Contemporary Art Fair. This will be Chapman’s first solo exhibition with James Makin Gallery.

Chapman’s paintings emerge from the artist’s everyday life in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Chapman has navigated the world as a deaf and non-verbal artist, finding expression through her vivid paintings. Her work depicts scenes of native flora and fauna alongside contemporary Indigenous life. Spanning from the red soil of Jigalong to the bustling streets of Port Hedland, her canvases resonate with a deep connection to Country and community and serve as a conduit for storytelling.
