Elcho Island Arts: Dharpa Djäma

October 5, 2023 - October 22, 2023

Courtesy: the artist and Brunswick Street Gallery, Melbourne.

BSG Projects and Elcho Island Arts come together to present new carvings by leading Yolŋu artists working at Galwinin’ku Community, Elcho Island, and surrounding homelands. Within Dharpa Djäma, meaning ‘wood work’ in Yolŋu Matha, both Dhuwa and Yirritja moieties–the two halves making up the Yolŋu world–come together. Representing multiple clan groups, languages, song-lines, and sacred spirits, this exhibition reveals the immense cultural depth and richness of the lands surrounding Elcho Island.

Showcasing represented artists Megan Yunupingu and Judy Manany’s newest works, and proudly introducing new ḏirramu (male) carvers David Djarrka, Jeremy Diwidiwi Gumana, Sandy Pascoe and Tommy Minburra, we invite you to immerse yourself in this culturally significant exhibition, revealing aspects of Yolŋu culture, lore, and creation as told by these amazing artists.

Dharpa Djäma is presented as part of Craft Contemporary 2023, an annual festival delivered by Craft Victoria.

Opening Event: Friday 6 October, 6 – 8pm.
