Five Walls presents an exhibition of work by Emma Langridge.
The singular motif of these paintings is the ruled line. In cartographic and meteorological diagrams, lines are an indication of contour and continuity, denoting uniformity and equal value along their length.
In this case, the line is repeated ad infinitum, amassing to fill the picture plane. This is a reductive approach, involving a mechanistic process which anchors the body in a series of endlessly repeated actions.
But where there is a strict methodology employing the human body, there is a tendency to capture unintentional elements. Through a process of assembly, disassembly and reassembly, what was initially intact and coherent, becomes ambiguous.
This is a process governed by decisions made at a subconscious level, where the perpetual shift and merge of drifting planes invites the propagation of glitch and fracture. It is these unplanned elements which are the focus, the noise enmeshed within the signal.
Opening Event: Friday 1 March, 6 – 9pm.
