The G Contemporary presents a solo exhibition by UK artist Gareth Edwards RWA, exhibiting a group of new paintings made in the Porthmeor Studios in St Ives made famous by Patrick Heron and Ben Nicholson. The studios look out over the long white sand bay of Porthmeor Beach in the coastal town of St Ives in Cornwall which shares many similarities with Noosa and the Queensland coast generally.
“Collectively referred to as the Ocean Light Series each piece is an individual essay on light and luminosity which bounce around the bay and off the sea here in all seasons”, says the artist. “Different seasons different times of the day all create varying effects and atmospheres that have been translated into a wide range of colours with a spectrum of chromatic intensities and emotional moods.”
“The beaches here are made up of layers of glistening scilla and glittering mica that add to the reflective and refractive properties of light .. an effect referred to by Patrick Heron as like a mirror .. very similar to effects found in Noosa and the East Coast of Queensland .. the similarities between St Ives are Noosa are astonishing.”
“Each new painting carries its own properties of light and therefore its own special atmosphere and its own emotional weather…”
