Curated by artist Tony Mighell, Abstraction: Systems, Signs, Syntheses celebrates expressive freedom articulated through drawing, calligraphy, and material exploration.
The exhibition features abstract paintings and works on paper by eight major historical and contemporary artists from Australia and USA: Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Peter Maloney, Brice Marden, Terry Winters, Lottie Consalvo, Newell Harry, Patrick Hartigan, and Matt Bromhead.
Spanning three decades, the earliest works were created in Central Australia and New York and the most recent in studios in Newcastle and Sydney. Connecting them is the primacy of small gestures, sensitivity to the poetics of materials, and a certain lyricism. Using drawing, collage, printmaking or painting, the artists conjure unique images that challenge representation and invite deeper recognition and communion.
Opening event: Sunday 30 March, 2-4pm
