While women have traditionally occupied the space of working with textiles and fibre crafts, often seen and accepted as ‘women’s work’, a growing number of queer and non-binary artists are embracing and claiming these techniques and materials for their practice. These artists have frequently learned craft techniques from their mothers and grandmothers, subverting heteronormative assumptions and claiming space within the medium.
Fluid Flax features six artists who identify as queer and non-binary, working with traditionally perceived ‘feminine crafts’ such as crochet, embroidery, weaving and textiles. The exhibition interrogates how these craft techniques are used as explorations of identity and storytelling.
Exhibited artists include Liam Benson, Phil Ferguson, Dennis Golding, Blake Griffiths, Kate Just and Trevor Smith.
Opening Event: Friday 18 August, 5 – 7pm.
