James Makin Gallery presents 6 artists from one of Australia’s most dynamic art centres, Spinifex Hill Studio. Located in South Hedland, a coastal area of the Pilbara, the centre represents Aboriginal artists from diverse cultural backgrounds and language groups.
Spinifex Hill Studio has no ‘house style’; instead, the studio supports an eclectic range of painting practices in recognition of the diversity of Indigenous experience. Many of the studio’s artists are linked by a familial lineage to art and cultural practice. This unique centre is a safe, holistic environment for artists, and has grown to become an important cultural and community place. Spinifex Hill Studio has grown into more than just a studio; it is a political space, a social meeting space and a gathering space for artists to continue their culture, storytelling and law-making.
Exhibited artists include Doreen Chapman, Maywokka (Mayiwalku) Chapman, Nancy Chapman, Gloria, Mulyatingki (Muljadingi) Marney and Nyaparu (William) Gardiner.
Opening Event: Saturday 27 April, 2 – 4pm.
