State of Abstraction brings together abstract works by some of Western Australia’s most historically important artists alongside newcomers and lesser-known makers.
Spanning the second half of the twentieth century to the present day, the exhibition examines the ways (and reasons) these artists have been so committed to staging profoundly heightened encounters with the complex intersections between materiality, meaning, perception, place, time, history and identity.
Drawn from the State Art Collection, works include those of Mark Grey-Smith, Jurek Wybraniec, Robert Juniper, Brian Blanchflower, Meeyakba Shane Pickett, Alex Spremberg, Miriam Stannage, Rebecca Baumann, Helen Smith, Michele Theunissen amongst many others.
The exhibition forms part of Re/Collections, a series of exhibitions presenting new ways of seeing, sharing, and showcasing works in the State Art Collection.
