Imants Tillers: The Mosman Yearslooks back at over forty years of work and begins with the moment in Imants Tillers’ career when he began painting on small, numbered boards rather than large canvases. Significantly, this moment transformed Tillers’ practice, and is what he refers to as One Painting. His work was then featured in a number of significant exhibitions, including: Documenta 7, 1982; 4nd Venice Biennale, 1986; Imants Tillers: works 1978-1988, Institute of Contemporary Art, London, 1988 amongst others.
Place is central to the work of Tillers. Through his work he acknowledges the artists who have gone before him, and his landscapes draw inspiration from poets and philosophers and he brings these disparate ideas together to tell stories of belonging and displacement, people and place.
Mosman has been a home to Tillers and he has documented its landscape and artistic history. This survey of close to fifty years’ of Tillers’ practice features Factum 1, 2021, the first artwork acquired by Mosman Art Gallery’s new Acquisition Fund, and one of many that are situated in Mosman and close to sixty other artworks.
