Through a subjective process-driven approach to abstract landscape painting, Jacob Spokes delves into the interplay and distinction between these bodies, highlighting the constant motion and ebb and flow of the tide line as it reaches out to the land and then runs back to the horizon.
Exploring the complexity and ever-changing relationship between land, sea, and sky, Spokes’ work captures the beauty and fragility of the natural world.
Tidelines as a body of work seeks to highlight the subtle nuances and intricacies of the Australian landscape. Lines are lost and found, overpainted to then reappear whilst flowing organically across the canvas. Areas of deep colour imbibe with more textured forms creating a ‘feeling’ of place and indeed build a dynamic landscape. Tidelines is not simply a representation of the physical world, but rather, an evocation of the emotional and spiritual connection between humanity and nature, speaking to both the fragility and resilience of the planet, and our own place within it.
Opening Event: Thursday 23 March, 6 – 8pm.
