Jeff Makin’s The Glen Harrow Paintings assembles for the first time works painted during the artist’s years at his family home, The Gables of Glen Harrow in Victoria’s Dandenong Ranges.

Described as a ‘landscape setting’ Makin’s family home was surrounded by impressive grounds, featuring towering oaks over 100 years old and a garden planted by renowned horticulturist C.J. Cole in the late 1800s. This garden became the focus of the artist’s wife, Elizabeth, with Makin describing his gardens at Glen Harrow as a meeting place for the two – she would plant, and he would paint.

Makin’s life long dedication has been to capture the genii locus, the spirit of place, that is imbibed in the landscape. This suite of paintings captures not only this, but the relationships this particular landscape, and time in life, that it represented. As is the artist’s want, a selection of the finest paintings from Makin’s time at Glen Harrow were kept for later reference and now comprise this small essay of joyous memories, released for acquisition in The Glen Harrow Paintings for the first time.
