THIS IS NO FANTASY presents Joel Arthur‘s first exhibition with the gallery, Plots and Grounds.

Arthur often references Modernist techniques and perceptual painting while integrating architectural structures and metaphorical forms with the description of landscape. His practice concentrates on faux-natural parks and gardens to discuss ownership, division, and development of land and the modification of place through time.

The works in Plots and Grounds are drawn from Arthur’s observations of his local surroundings, referring to art history, and are filtered and disrupted through his studio process. The artificial spaces in his imagery fused with fabricated still life structures and at times more abstracted forms, draw attention to the false and multiple ways that culture and histories can be narrated while mediated through painting.
