Where Delusion Meets the Sun, curated by artist James Drinkwater, presents works by Julian Schnabel, Lottie Consalvo and Wayne Magrin through themes of deviancy, defiance, escapism and fantasy.
Based in New York, Schnabel rose to fame in the 1980s for his bold Neo Expressionist paintings. He later became an acclaimed filmmaker and remains a prominent figure in the USA and globally, celebrated as a master painter. In this exhibition, Schnabel applies sinuous forms over various old maps. These marks traverse outlined state boundaries and geographies, evoking a sense of escape and defiance.
Consalvo presents new work including the video piece La Femme, shot in France, explores historical and mystical associations between femininity, nature, and the sacred, and humanity’s capacity for belief in the unseen.
Sydney-based Magrin’s current body of work is inspired by Daniel Kehlmann’s novel Tyll, which retells the German fable of Till Eulenspiegel, a peasant trickster whose jokes and pranks have spawned numerous folk tales.
Opening Event: Friday 10 May, 6 – 8pm.
