LAURIE STEER is a potter whose work experiments with (and questions) ceramics production and tradition.
Curator Glenn Barkey describes his practice as having a “look at this, look at this intensity – totally self-absorbed”, and compared it to Glenn Gould’s recordings of Bach’s ‘Goldberg Variations’ – which were played at almost inhuman speed but with complete accuracy.
The 6 large and 3 smaller ceramic works in Steer’s ‘Meditations’ can be likened (in Barkley’s words) to “a mash-up of Coromandel anti-vax spirituality, anal dentata and the Gamorrean guards from Return of the Jedi.”
