Liz Coats‘ abstract paintings are all-encompassing, directly linked to the complex world of light and colour, apart from being illustrative. Fractal shifts and other layered interactions that emerge in her engagement with paint substances, can call to mind elemental forces interacting with water, vegetation, or the stones beneath our feet.
In her most recent series, Essence, Coats has created pigments derived from organic materials. This body of work is labour intensive, distilling botanical extracts into pigments involves additional and carefully calibrated.
While the material, the patterns and the textures of Coats works’ elicit the natural environment she doesn’t intend to replicate it, but instead reflect upon how we sense the subtle nuance through our own experiences. Afterall, it is our body’s senses which inform our own existence.
“Colours, their translucencies and opacities in rhythmic interplay with local light, stay with me in the studio and influence all the experiments with paint colours … We see colours through light, though light in itself is invisible. Colours and their spacing in a painting are relatively two-dimensional, while there is a phenomenal aspect to experiencing them that I seek to share. ” – Liz Coats, 2023
