day 01. presents an exhibition of new work by New Zealand artist Martin Poppelwell. The artist’s first solo show in Australia borrows its title …the ones I’ve finished… from a line featured in ‘Cascando’, a radio play by Samuel Beckett, the great minimalist master and winner of the 1969 Nobel Prize for Literature.
Beckett’s dark engaging comic voice and fragmented words offer purposeful nonchalance for Poppelwell. Personal traits that play into the whimsical and mis-behaving grids of Poppelwell’s paintings and ceramics. Where that which is omitted, daubed, paused and twirled, posits all the magic that a painting or an object requires.
