Pat Brassington has achieved a critically acclaimed reputation as the creator of some of Australia’s most fragile and intense images. The core of her practice is a sensitivity to the nervous system. Like artists such as Mike Kelley, David Lynch and Louise Bourgeois, Brassington is connected to the knowledge of the body, the brain in our guts, the part of us that feels before it thinks.
A curated selection of new and classic images, I wake to sleep and take my waking slow is devoted to Brassington’s remarkable consistency as an artist. Always startling, Brassington’s profound career has earned her the mantle as one of Australia’s great, unforgettable artists.
Key works from this exhibition utilise source material from the artist’s history, with particular images originating in the mid-1980s. Reeling in the archive, Brassington has created new works that speak to her perennial preoccupation of the body and its innumerable sensations.
Opening Event: Wednesday 19 June, 6 – 8pm.
