Sometimes to see the art of certain artists for the first time can be a shock, to see the art of Grace Burzese at various points on her career path can be like seeing her art for the first time, over and over again. It can be like seeing the artist herself in a new light.
What does not change are the fundamentals; this is art by an intelligent, courageous artist who approaches art making with a sense of adventure; exploring materials, colour, the real and illusion in dimensions of space. Works are only consistent in that they explore the territory of abstraction, through mark making and paint application that varies from contemplative to explosive and gives an illusion of depth. The approach is immediate, blending colours within a single stroke or measured arm’s length brush strokes – the body of the artist as absent / present.
