In a series of new oil paintings, Saffron Newey‘s Pastoral Muse features appropriated fragments and fusions of various art historical moments. Local examples of Australian Impressionistic landscapes by Sydney Long, Julian Ashton and William Piguenit are here reimagined and visited upon by Pre-Raphaelite nymphs and Baroque animals, among other historical art motifs. The works collapse time, history and identities into new imaginary, pastoral narratives.
