Open Spaces represents an escape to the country as opposed to the closed spaces of lockdown. Sandra Blackburne wanted to depict fresh air, expansiveness and freedom. These paintings are a collection of works derived from plein air sketches produced during her travels throughout NSW, and depict Blackburne’s interest in the effects of light on the landscape. Given that they were produced over three years, they reflect diverse spaces, differing landscapes and changing seasons, but all focus on the drama, fragility and power of country.
