LON Gallery presents Painting Today: the intelligent blotch, Sarah CrowEST’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition comprises two distinctive bodies of works spanning painting and textiles, catalysed during a series of residencies in Europe and Australia over the past 18 months.
In Painting Protocol, CrowEST proceeds according to protocols that limit actions to a series of proscribed moves. Beginning as an attempt to quell an endlessly expanding, experimental diversionary approach to all things and maintain a steady beat in the face of overwhelm, Painting Protocol quickly became a formal logic to inform to the process of art-making, resulting in an ongoing series of works on board.
Exhibited in concert, The Way of Wool was developed after CrowEST’s residency at the Lottozero Textile Lab in Prato, Italy. Upon returning home, the artist became increasingly aware of the environmental impact and waste byproduct of the woollen textile industry in Australia. In response to this, she collected designer deadstock from outlets to make new works, continuing her conceptual and ethical interest in circularity and remixing; a notion inspired by 1970’s Dub music.
By working with deadstock fabrics, CrowEST is limited to a modest number of colours, inadvertently providing a similar framework to Painting Protocol, a harmonising logic between these two bodies of work that spans diverse media.
