For Sarah Rayner’s debut solo exhibition with the gallery, distance of a whisper, Rayner presents a significant body of work that honours the resilience of Australian native plants.
Over the past 12 months, Rayner has created a series of unique hand carved porcelain forms which exemplify the mastery of her sculptural works, the ingenuity of construction in porcelain and the poetic logic of each exquisite form. The hybrid forms are inspired by Rayner’s examination of, and reflection on, the Australian bushland surrounding her studio in South East Queensland – observations of the reproductive organs of native plants and the cyclic metamorphosis that leads to the creation of the most exquisite fruits and seedpods as end-products.
Over the past 30 years Rayner has developed an enduring and distinctive sculptural vocabulary that introduces the viewer to a world of fragility and strength, extraordinary beauty and menace, empathy and care.
Opening Event: Saturday 25 Feb, floor talk by the artist 2.30pm & opening 3 – 5pm.
