Simon De Boer is a Canadian-Australian painter based in Melbourne, Australia. Often travelling as a child, he has lived in numerous countries, most prominently Japan, of which experiences, philosophies and social connections feed into his art practice.
Simon’s expanded painting work draws on the temporary quality of associative memory, shaped by installation, limits and factors introduced by the artist and gallery environment. De Boer’s images fuse painting processes with mechanical production techniques, which explore form and seriality. Translucent colour is layered in modulations, producing new colour mixtures and tonal variations, which emerge alongside revisited gestures.
Through these processes, De Boer reflects on the gap between presence and representation, grappling with our own memory and histories, and the cognitive space of painting; where thought or sensation are quite in our control.
Opening Event: Friday 18 November, 2022, 6-8pm.
