The series of paintings in Meltwater explores the effects of climate change on the glaciers of Europe and Iceland. It is based on Sue Lovegrove’s recent research trip to Iceland when she was able to crawl around, get up close to, listen to and gaze down on several different glaciers. The experience was both mesmerising and compelling. The sheer beauty of the surface, with its wrinkled sculpted skin and the scale of the ice rivers plummeting from 2,000 metres to sea level is contrasted against an overwhelming sense of vulnerability and fragility. By the end of the century, 80% of Europe’s glaciers will be extinct due to irreversible human-induced global warming.
