“This exhibition is about how people in western society are like fishes swimming into a trap, once you get in you can’t get out. The basic principle for many fish traps is a funnel. The fish swims into the big end and can’t get out because it’s become smaller on the other side. There is a baiting happening in society where a big idea is hindered by small things and makes people feel very stuck because the majority of the responsibility is placed on the individual. An example is there is a massive push for people to be physically healthy but most people can’t leave their suburb without passing a McDonalds or candy bars in their super market because there at the check out. Another example is phone use, these things are designed to essentially never be put down and there are teams of people working to connect you to this device but if you can get off your phone it’s your fault. Once you start noticing these traps you feel more targeted, frustrated and tired. As people discipline and self-control goes a long way in many areas but how do we harness those attributes when corporations are devising plans of attack and individuals are just trying their best.” ~ Tyrown Waigana
The exhibition will feature digital prints, handmade tufted rugs, sculptures, paintings and wall ornaments. The visuals will focus on ‘fish people’ figures and netted patterning to reflect the theme.
