I have delighted in the combination of ‘atmospheric’ colours with solid, sharply angular, wood forms; in taking visual dives under the surface, the paint skin, into/onto the patterned grain of solid wood…

Wood, water, pigment… The naturally warm ground colour of birch plywood is often visible through layered densities of colour, influencing perception of blues, blacks, greens, coppery pinks, metallic whites; or a yellow ochre, a wash of cadmium orange…

This suite of ten multi-panel paintings has slowly proceeded by an accretion of decisions and responses, both judged and intuitive. A predominantly cool, spatially recessive, colour palette is always in play with the modules’ physical projections from the wall plane. The works installed form angular undulations, casting shadows of random intensity; boundaries between painterly and sculptural space are in flux…” – Virginia Coventry, 2023.
