New gallery space opens in Wellington

Blackie transforms a former cafe into a stunning space for art.

Words: Emily Riches

A new chapter for Wellington’s art scene has begun with the opening of a new waterfront gallery at the iconic former Overseas Passenger Terminal.

After almost two decades of running Page Blackie Gallery, art dealer and gallery owner James Blackie has returned to the heart of Wellington’s art community to do things a little bit differently. He saw the need for a dedicated, beautiful venue to showcase fine art, and transformed the old Mojo café into a stunning gallery space in just four weeks.

Blackie says, First and foremost, I am an art dealer. I represent some of the country’s leading artists and take enormous pride and pleasure in selling extraordinary artworks on their behalf. I also work with private collectors, corporates and public collections in sourcing or selling exceptional artworks.

The first solo exhibition of Joe Sheehan’s work in September marked the beginning of many exciting projects to come.

Visit the gallery at: 1 Clyde Quay Wharf, Te Aro, Wellington, New Zealand, 6011
