Christopher Zanko joins N.Smith Gallery

The Illawarra-based artist brings his distinctive perspective on suburban life to Sydney representation.

Words: Emily Riches

Christopher Zanko, an artist based in the Illawarra/Dharawal region of New South Wales, has joined the roster of N.Smith Gallery. Known for his unique approach to woodblock carving, Zanko transforms everyday suburban environments into poignant reflections on memory, home and place.

Drawing inspiration from the architecture and culture of his hometown, Zanko’s work is deeply influenced by the meditative process of Japanese woodblock carving. His subjects – ranging from red brick homes to terracotta pots – are imbued with individuality and permanence.

Through hours of careful carving and colour studies, Zanko captures the essence of suburban life, from tyre swans to specialty terrazzo porches. “These actions can’t be undone,” Zanko explains, “it’s like writing your name in cement.” His work preserves the quiet histories and personal connections formed through everyday objects and actions.

A finalist in prestigious awards such as the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship, Sulman and Wynne Prize, and Kings School Art Prize, Zanko’s work is housed in significant collections, including The White Rabbit Collection, Macquarie Group, Museums of History New South Wales, Wollongong Art Gallery and University of Wollongong collections.

Zanko’s first solo exhibition with N.Smith Gallery is scheduled for 2026.
