RAFT artspace closes its doors

8 Hele Gallery to take over from longstanding Alice Springs gallery.

Words: Erin Irwin

Director Dallas Gold has announced that Alice Springs’ RAFT artspace will be closing after 22 years in operation, wrapping up a programme that saw hundreds of exhibitions showcasing contemporary First Nations art from central and northern Australia. Initially based in the Top End, the gallery moved to Alice Springs in 2010, and presented extensively in Sydney and Hobart. The gallery was well known for its dynamic exhibitions and thoughtful relationships with artists and Art Centres.

“I have let go of the space, however my passion for First Nations art and culture has not diminished” says Gold, who will keep the gallery’s website live as an archive for the many works that passed through its doors. He also noted a new gallery would be taking over the space, stating “I believe it is important to respond to and exhibit the rich and dynamic art by Aboriginal artists of this region in the context of where it is made. Operating an ethical gallery with an exhibition program in Mparntwe is not without its challenges so please consider supporting 8 Hele Gallery”.

8 Hele Gallery has taken over 8 Hele Crescent, and its double exhibition featuring works by Pastor Roy Yaltjanki and Katjarra Butler will be on show until the 18 May.
