Niagara Galleries presents Bradd Westmoreland’s latest exhibition Waves of love and fear. His most personal exhibition to date, Westmoreland completed these paintings after a difficult personal period that saw the artist away from his studio for eight months; the longest time he has spent away from his otherwise consistent practice. His return to his studio coincided with an urge, a necessity to paint, draw and write that he has never felt more strongly. The works exhibited here are a culmination of that creatively productive period.
“Art is a type of foundation for a grounded existence for me: an anchor that l am able to hoist, allowing myself to flow with the waves that continue to rise and fall, full of love and fear.” – Bradd Westmoreland, 2024.
Westmoreland’s richly coloured, atmospheric paintings executed with considerable technical skill incorporate both figuration and abstraction in dreamlike scenes from which we intuit greater narratives. A highly individual artist, Westmoreland has been exhibiting since 1997. His work has been included in numerous public exhibitions, including Geelong Contemporary Art Prize, Geelong Art Gallery (2018); Painting. More Painting at ACCA (2016); and Melbourne Now at National Gallery of Victoria (2013-14) and his works are held in major collections nationally and internationally including British Museum, London; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; and QAG/GOMA, Brisbane.
Westmoreland lives and works in Melbourne.
