Reflecting upon the way we live in the hours after dark, Dani McKenzie presents Evening’s Empire, an exhibition of large-scale street-scapes, night-life scenes and pictures of ‘home’. Where previously McKenzie sought found photographs to use as source material for paintings, more recently she has begun working from her own images and observations. For this exhibition, McKenzie has utilised both staged and candid photographs taken whilst journeying around the city at night, making paintings that offer fleeting glimpses into the lives of others, and private moments that occur in public spaces. With an interest in ways of seeing, she engages the perspective of the viewer as a passer-by – a flâneur – wandering through the city at night, casually glancing through a side-eye.
Opening event: Wednesday 31 August, 5 – 7pm.
