Each year NAS Galleries present an outstanding and varied exhibition program across its unique gallery spaces at the National Art School, including the two-level NAS Gallery in an historic former cellblock and the new Drawing Gallery that first opened in 2021, part of the School’s National Centre for Drawing.
Visiting the NAS Galleries is always special experience due to their position in the heritage-listed Darlinghurst Gaol, still surrounded by the original convict-built walls dating from 1822, and operating as an art school since 1922. Enhancing the school’s role as a leading centre for visual arts education in the Asia- Pacific, the NAS Galleries team curates ambitious group and solo exhibitions by Australian and international artists that foster critical appreciation of art and innovative art practice. The NAS Galleries program also collaborates with major festivals and events including Sydney Festival, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, Biennale of Sydney and Vivid.
NAS’s graduating students display their work at the annual Grad Shows, where visitors come to discover the next generation of Australia’s leading contemporary artists, and exhibitions such as the biannual Dobell Drawing Prize often tour to regional galleries. A dynamic public program supports each show, including talks, tours and hands-on art making activities, providing a rich and engaging context for the participation in, appreciation and understanding of art.
