In 2020, NorthSite Contemporary Arts (formerly KickArts) relaunched within Bulmba-ja Arts Centre (formerly Centre of Contemporary Arts) in Cairns. As one of few longstanding, independent contemporary visual arts institutions north of Brisbane, the company has a proud track record, demonstrating resilience and excellence over decades, championing artists of the north and presenting boundary-pushing programs through an experimental ethos relevant to a wide region.
NorthSite works across disciplines in visual art, craft, design, sound, performance and screen media, and in collaboration with individual artists, Indigenous Art Centres, galleries, touring bodies and independent arts collectives and companies to realise dynamic exhibitions and programs; often presenting a diversity of contemporary work unseen elsewhere in Australia. Keep an eye and ear tuned to the north over the coming years as NorthSite reveals a refreshed strategic vision that puts contemporary artists of the North at the forefront and in dialogue with artists and ideas relevant to the wide neighbouring Asia Pacific region.
Membership helps NorthSite’s not for profit company thrive and allows for the formation of additional community initiatives. Friends of NorthSite receive invitations to special events and activities and discounts on programs and in the NorthSite Store and online, plus enhanced professional development opportunities for artists throughout the year.
The Outback Regional Gallery alternates a diverse annual program of touring, solo and group exhibitions including its annual visual arts prize – The John Villiers Outback Art Prize. Generously sponsored by The John Villiers Trust, the prize now worth $16,000 attracts talent locally and across the nation celebrating the cultural richness and inspiration from the inner regions of Australia. Now in its 21st year the prize encourages younger creatives to enter
the emerging youth category and annual professional arts development program to continue the legacy of the late John ‘Jack’ Villier’s vision to increase opportunity for young people living remote.
