The inaugural exhibition of Outdoor Gallery, Outback Way takes art out of the traditional gallery setting and gives the viewer a deconstructed gallery experience in the wide red landscape of the Eastern MacDonnell Ranges, traditionally part of the Eastern Arrernte nation.

Drive the iconic Plenty Highway to view 13 of the 14 double sided billboards featuring 28 artworks by 27 artists printed onto 3.6 x 2.4m aluminium sheeting. The 2021 inaugural exhibition was developed in consultation with curatorial advisor Hetti Perkins and presents a cross cultural showcase of artwork from Western Australian, Northern Territorian and Queenslander remote and regional artists, and includes painting, photography and sculpture. The first billboards are located 170 kilometres from Alice Springs; 25 kilometres off the Plenty Highway is the Engawala Community where you’ll find billboard 5 not far from the Engawala Art Centre; and continue your travels another 111 kilometres towards the Queensland border for the final billboards.
