Life’s a Beach for Art Basel

Art Basel Miami Beach opens December.

Words: Erin Irwin

The 2023 edition of Art Basel Miami Beach will soon be upon us, with 277 international galleries from 34 countries set to attend. This year’s offering is slightly smaller than last year’s, with a focus on galleries located in North and South America. Notably, 2023 will be the last fair with Director Vincenzo de Bellis at the helm, with Bridget Finn set to take over for next year’s edition.

Alongside big names like David Zwirner, Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth and Pace, a wealth of new galleries are set to make their debut. Galerie Minsky from Paris, Ortuzar Projects from New York, and Weinstein Gallery from San Francisco will be heading straight to the main sector on their maiden voyage, while others such as Château Shatto (Los Angeles), Luis De Jesus Los Angeles (Los Angeles), Gypsum Gallery (Cairo), Lyles and King (New York), Silverlens (Manila, New York) and The Ranch (New York) will be setting up in the Nova section. The fair will also see sections titled Positions, which will feature solo presentations, and Survey, which will see galleries presenting historic works.

Art Basel Miami Brach will also host the Meridians sector, featuring 19 new and site-specific works. Introduced in 2019 to showcase large-scale works that otherwise usually would not find a place within a tradition art fair, this year’s exhibition will be curated by Magalí Arriola, Mexico City-based curator and Director of Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporaneo, and will feature works by Ja’Tovia Gary, Hew Locke, Saif Azzuz, Marcelo Brodsky, Reginald O’Neal, Julie Buffalohead, and Gabriel de la Mora.

The art world behemoth will run from December 8 – 10, with VIP preview days scheduled for December 6 – 7. A full list of all participating galleries is as follows:
