A commercial gallery that operates with unpretentious certainty can be hard to come by in 2024. But Charles Nodrum, founder and director of Charles Nodrum Gallery in Narrm/Melbourne, has run his gallery this way for 40 years.
It’s not just a business strategy for Nodrum. It’s also his natural conduct. This stalwart of the Australian art world is also someone who enjoys the company of artists and holds a deep appreciation of art history. He works with quiet authority, his success built by a quiet and deliberate purpose. Opening the gallery in 1984, institutional and private collectors quickly came to appreciate his keen understanding of the art he handles. He also knows the collections where works might be placed and is able to match their particularities to a potential owner.
