Primavera 2024: Young Australian Artists Explore Cultural Connections

The next wave of talent goes on show at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) presents the 33rd edition of Primavera: Young Australian Artists, a landmark exhibition celebrating the country’s most promising artistic talents aged 35 and under. This year’s exhibition, curated by Lucy Latella, brings together five diverse artists who explore the intricate web of cultural connections in the face of contemporary challenges.

The featured artists – Teresa Busuttil (SA), Chun Yin Rainbow Chan (陳雋然) (VIC), Aidan Hartshorn (ACT), Monica Rani Rudhar (NSW), and Sarah Ujmaia (VIC) – present works that interrogate the formation and evolution of cultural identities. Through various mediums, they examine how these identities are shaped, maintained, and transformed across generations, engaging with family, community, and technology in the process.

Primavera has been a cornerstone of Australia’s contemporary art scene since its inception in 1992. Established by the MCA in collaboration with Dr Edward Jackson AM and Mrs Cynthia Jackson AM as a tribute to their daughter Belinda, the exhibition has played a crucial role in launching the careers of numerous Australian artists. Each year, the carefully selected curator embarks on an extensive nationwide search, meeting with young artists to curate a show that captures the zeitgeist of Australia’s emerging art scene.

The 2024 edition continues this tradition, offering a platform for these five artists to present their unique perspectives on cultural identity and connection. Their works promise to challenge viewers’ perceptions and spark conversations about the complexities of cultural heritage in our rapidly changing world.

As Primavera enters its fourth decade, it remains a must-see event for art enthusiasts, collectors, and anyone interested in the future of Australian contemporary art. The exhibition not only showcases the individual talents of these five artists but also offers a collective snapshot of the concerns and aspirations of a new generation of Australian creators.
