Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery to publish monograph on its illustrious history (so far).

Words: Erin Irwin

Sydney stalwart Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery has revealed that 2024 will see the publication of Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery: The First 40 Years, an exhaustive recollection of the gallery’s impressive run thus far. Having nurtured many of Australia’s best artists over the past decades, the gallery has plenty to write about, and the book should be a fascinating insight into the inner workings of the Australian art world.

The book is authored and edited by Felicity Fenner, who is Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales and Chair of the City of Sydney’s Public Art Advisory Panel, alongside her work as a curator, writer and consultant. Using Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery’s extensive archives, the book will chart the gallery’s incredible journey, and include installation imagery for exhibitions staged there from its inception in 1982.

More than 350 artists have exhibited with the gallery thus far, and the book will touch on many of their stories, alongside those of famous art world figures. First-hand accounts have been provided by a plethora of artists, curators and philanthropists, with contributors to the monograph including Gareth Sansom, Jenny Watson, Dale Frank, Julie Rrap, John Kaldor, Luca Belgiorno-Nettis, Djon Mundine, Marc Newson, Nicholas Baume, Amanda Love, Rosalie Gascoigne, Bill Henson, Fiona Hall, David Noonan, Tracey Moffatt, Callum Morton, Patricia Piccinini, Destiny Deacon, Bill Culbert, Isaac Julien, Imants Tillers, Nyapanyapa Yunupiŋu, Mikala Dwyer, Daniel Boyd, Del Kathryn Barton, Jim Lambie, Brook Andrew, Tom Polo, Kaylene Whiskey and Dhambit Munuŋgurr, alongside a foreword from Anna Waldmann.

“We are incredibly proud to have been able to champion the work of some of the most important contemporary artists of our time for more than four decades through our work at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery”, says Founder and Director Roslyn Oxley, “the Gallery was founded to provide a platform in support of artist’s creativity, experimentation and uncensored ideas and we continue with that vision 40 years on.”

The book will be available for purchase from 14 February 2024, both from the gallery and book stores nationally.
