Mosman Art Gallery has announced the appointment of Steven Alderton as its new Director and Mosman Council’s Manager of Cultural Services. A highly respected curator and cultural leader, Alderton brings over 30 years of experience in major institutions across Australia and abroad.

Previously the Director and CEO of the National Art School, Alderton has also held senior roles at the Australian Museum, Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre and Lismore Regional Gallery. His curatorial portfolio includes landmark exhibitions with artists such as Tracey Moffatt, Ricky Swallow, John Olsen, and Margaret Olley. He has also worked closely with leading institutions including the Biennale of Sydney, Art Gallery of New South Wales, and Asia Triennial Manchester.

“I’m excited to be joining Mosman Art Gallery, which has an outstanding reputation across the broader arts and cultural community,” Alderton said. “From the high calibre of artists to the quality of exhibitions, in particular the Mosman Art Prize, which is regarded as the premier open painting prize in Australia, and the vast and engaged network of members, supporters, sponsors, friends and volunteers, the gallery has an exciting future and I look forward to being part of its next chapter.”

Alderton’s expertise extends beyond curatorial practice into governance, education, and strategic development, having served on numerous boards and advisory panels at local, state, and federal levels.

Mosman Mayor Ann Marie Kimber welcomed the appointment, noting that Alderton’s “creative vision for cultural institutions, and wealth of experience delivering major arts projects and international exhibitions, combined with a background in education, research and cultural development, would be a great asset for Mosman.”

Alderton commences his new role in May, following the retirement of long-serving director John Cheeseman in February after 15 years of leadership.
