In contemporary Australian art, William Mackinnon stands as a distinctive voice, his canvases serving as portals to a world where the familiar and the fantastical intertwine. Born in 1978 and currently dividing his time between Ibiza, the UK, and Australia, Mackinnon has carved out a unique niche with his ‘psychological landscapes’ – works that blur the boundaries between external reality and internal experience.
Mackinnon’s connection to the Australian landscape runs deep, informed not only by his upbringing but also by his experiences working as an artist in residence at Mangkaja Arts in Fitzroy Crossing, Western Australia, and as a field officer for the Papunya Tula artists in the Northern Territory. These encounters with the vast and varied Australian terrain have infused his work with a sense of place that is at once specific and universal….
