Lisa Tomasetti’s PHOTO 2024 exhibition Manifest reflects on gender identity and the representation of femininity in contemporary photographic portraiture.

The bodies in Tomasetti’s work are adorned in Victorian era garments that carry with them a conservative and restrictive concept of gender and sexuality. Tomasetti’s subjects are poised amidst an ambiguous and expansive sky, in the process of liberation and transformation. The artist’s lens integrates the historic construction of women’s representation in photography. Manifest collides a utopian and dystopian vision of gender, creating a space for her characters to unfurl.
