Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award

Requirements: The Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award (SHNPA) will be awarded to the Best Portrait being a realistic depiction of a particular living person, with the subject known to the artist and aware of the artist’s intention. Finalists may be asked to supply sitter contact details for marketing purposes. Eligible artworks must have been completed since 26 May 2023. Artists can enter artworks completed within the last 12 months and must not have been exhibited before at SECCA.
Eligibility: Open to all Australian artists over the age of 18. Artists must be a permanent resident of Australia at time of entry.

One of Australia’s most loved and richest awards for realistic portraiture, the biennial Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award celebrates portraiture in memory of the dedicated arts patron and supporter, Shirley Hannan.
The $50,000 biennial award is non-acquisitive and attracts hundreds of entries from many of Australia’s most respected artists.
A prerequisite for the award was made that those works selected to hang depict their subjects accurately without abstraction and demonstrate a sound skill and knowledge of drawing and painting technique.

Before completing this form please make payment here. Entry fee is $55 (inclusive of GST) per entry. Entry fee is non-refundable and covers administration and handling. Any entry not accompanied by payment of entry fee will be ineligible.

Dates for your diary
– Eligible artworks must have been completed since 26 May 2023.
– Entries close at midnight on Monday 30 September 2024.
– Artists will be advised of preselection for exhibition by close of business Monday 21 October 2024 via email.
– The winner will be announced at the opening event on Friday 29 November 2024 at SECCA (Zingel Place, Bega) and online.
– Public exhibition dates: Saturday 30 November 2024 to Saturday 15 February 2025.
